Medical technology has made wonderful progress, but on occasion there are serious flaws in the manufacturing or design of medical devices. Hip replacement systems are among these medical devices. When properly designed and manufactured they help many individuals to reduce pain and replace worn out natural body parts. Sometimes errors are made and a recall is required. At times there is no recall until after lawsuits are filed and the manufacturer of the hip replacement system. Unfortunately more often than not hip replacement recalls are not done until there is enough evidence to convince the manufacturer that there is a problem with a particular hip replacement system. Sometimes the manufacturer is not convinced until numerous lawsuits prover otherwise.
Hip Replacement Recall- DePuy Recall
There are many manufacturers of hip replacement systems, some of the better known manufacturers are DePuy Orthopaedics and Zimmer, both of which have issued recalls for some of the hip replacement systems sold in the US. Lawsuits resulted after hip replacement of these systems. DePuy issued a voluntary recall of its trademarked ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and its trademarked DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The recall was made for systems that first became available in July 2003.

Many patients reported experiencing pain and discomfort after implant of these hip systems. Similarly patients reported pain and discomfort after undergoing hip replacement of Zimmer Durom Cup Implant systems. In many instances the surgeon sees nothing wrong, because it appears normal in the X-rays. The Zimmer Durom implant systems are from 2006 to 2008.
The ASR Hip replacement system implant is one of many hip replacement systems made by DePuy. The reason for the hip replacement recalls is that ASR hip replacement systems showed an unusually large number of second hip replacement surgeries to alleviate pain and discomfort from the initial implant of the ASR hip replacement system. The manufacturer reported about 12% of patients receiving implantation of the ASR hip replacement system needed a second surgery for the hip replacement within a five year period.
Typical symptoms indicating a problem with the hip replacement system includes pain, swelling, and problems walking. Immediately after surgery this is expected, but not several months or years post surgery. The cause of pain from the hip replacement may be attributed to loosening of the implant, fracture of the bone around the implant, dislocation. Sometimes accumulation of the wear and tear from the ball and socket component in the hip replacement system causes patients problems.
Patients suffering from defective hip replacement systems even when not recalled are in many instances entitled to compensation.
